World Breastfeeding Week: August 1-7

The Mother and Child Health and Education Trust, in association with UNICEF Maharashtra, has produced a new 10 step video series to support this year's World Breastfeeding Week 2010 campaign.takes and takes great pleasure in presenting their new website Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding:

Step 1.  Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff.

Step 2.  Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy.

Step 3.  Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.

Step 4.  Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth.

Step 5.  Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they should be separated from their infants.

Step 6.  Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk unless medically indicated.

Step 7.  Practice rooming- in - allow mothers and infants to remain together - 24 hours a day.

Step 8.  Encourage breastfeeding on demand.

Step 9.  Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants.

Step 10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic.

Busy Wih the Kids and Teenagers

I've had a busy week and the internet has been down on-and-off at home. My TEENAGE nieces also came up for the week. They're actually behaving more than last summer.

We went to Justin Bieber's concert on Wednesday! (Pics to come.) My nieces are in love with him, especially the older one. She was a little disappointed that she didn't get to meet him after the concert. She was more also upset with Sissy for making us leave "earlier" afterwards. We waited about an hour after the concert just in hope of seeing him! It was a quarter till midnight when we left. Sissy had a meltdown and starting crying that she was "tired and wanted to GO HOME." She actually started when JB came out to sing his FIRST song at 9p!

I was exhausted the next day. (I've actually stayed up late with them a couple of nights! My body just can't do it anymore and the 2 little ones like to be up early.) Sissy had her last swim lesson. She didn't want to go but being a mean mom, I made her go! We also went to a new water park called Schlitterbahn. (Pics to come. Beat you can't wait!) Everyone had a great time. Bubbie was already planning to come back when we were getting ready to leave. Baby Girl was passed out on the drive home. (I wished I thought of taking a pic of that.) Everyone scrafed down their pizza that night! I stayed up late again. Now I'm exhausted and can't wait for Sunday that's when my weekend starts .

Kansas City First Milk Bank

Got (mama's) milk?

I've actually read it first at the Kansas City Nursing News. It was on the front page! You can visit the article here!

It's exciting to hear about the Kansas City Regional Milk Bank at the St. Luke's hospital! It will be the first human milk bank donor depot. It will serve as a collection point for the Mother’s Milk Bank of Denver until it is a fully functional milk bank in 2011.

For the mother's first donation, blood lab screening and a medical exam is completed. The donated milk is screened and pasteurized in Denver. Human milk is distributed to infants throughout the region with a doctors' prescription. It is often prescribe to infants in the neonatal intensive care units.

Happy 4th!

I've been busy this past week. I finally got Sissy's room painted in True Turquoise! I was hoping to get her whole room cleaned out, too, but that's not going to happen!!! Sissy's been gone for 2 weeks; she will be home on Monday with hubby and the other kids. They're all away for the 4th and it's been raining. I'm working this whole weekend so I'll be back on Wednesday with another giveaway out.
